What We Do

The Network links groups and organisations that support families that include an adult with a learning disability.

Our key objective is to work together to promote better life chances for families that include someone with a learning disability.

By linking groups and organisation we give a national focus to a wide range of policy issues concerning family carers of adults with a learning disability. These family carers increasingly include people with a learning disability who are family carers in their own right.

The Network shares ideas and the development of good practice.  We would like to hear from you if you feel your work would benefit from a family carer perspective.

We circulate a newsletter and information highlighting key national developments.

Regular events enable groups, organisations and individual family carers to come together to share ideas and to discuss policy issues.

Who is a family carer?

A family carer has personal experience of caring for a family member who has a learning disability, even if that individual has moved away from home. A family carer is a person who is not paid to have a personal, continuous relationship with a person with a learning disability.  If you are a family carer this website could be useful to you to find out where local groups are in your area, and for information resources.

A learning disability is "A reduced ability to understand new or complex information or to learn new skills; and a reduced ability to cope independently which started before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development." Department of Health
