What is Sarcoma?
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that starts in the body’s connective tissues, such as muscles, bones, fat, and cartilage. It can develop almost anywhere in the body, although it is most commonly found in the arms, legs, chest, or abdomen. The exact cause of sarcoma is unknown, but it is believed to be related to certain genetic abnormalities or environmental exposures.
Diagnosing Sarcoma
If your doctor suspects that you may have sarcoma, they will likely order several tests to get a better understanding of the cancer and help make a diagnosis. These tests may include a physical examination, imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI, a biopsy, and blood tests. If the cancer is found, your doctor may order additional tests to determine if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
Treatment Options
Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will create a treatment plan personalized to your needs. The treatment options for sarcoma may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. In some cases, the sarcoma may not respond to any of the treatments, and your doctor may suggest a clinical trial or an investigational therapy to try and better manage the cancer.
Prognosis
The prognosis for sarcoma depends on a few different factors, including the type of cancer, the size and location of the tumor, the stage of the cancer, and whether it has spread. Generally, the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the better the outlook. Your doctor will be able to give you more information based on your individual diagnosis.
Managing Your Health
It is important to take steps to maintain your health while you are undergoing treatment for sarcoma. Getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, managing stress, and keeping up with your doctor’s appointments can all help keep your body as strong as possible.
