10 Tips to Incorporate Mindfulness into your Life and Health
Mindfulness has been shown to provide many health benefits, such as helping to reduce stress, increasing positive emotion, and improving attention, concentration and sleep. Here are 10 tips to help you incorporate mindfulness into your daily life and health:
1. Practice Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to start a mindfulness practice. Take time each day to focus on your breath. All you need is a few minutes to sit still in a quiet space and focus on breathing, or check out guided meditations for more help.
2. Exercise Mindfully
Add mindfulness to your workout. Pay attention to your body as you exercise. Connect with your movements, notice the way your body feels as you move, and be aware of any emotions that come up.
3. Eat Slowly with Awareness
Mindful eating is the practice of paying full attention to the food you’re eating and savoring each bite. Put down your phone and turn off the TV while you eat to be truly present.
4. Pay Attention to Your Senses
Take time to notice what’s around you. Notice the smell of fresh brewed coffee, or the sound of birds chirping as you walk around your neighborhood. These moments of being present can make a real difference in your wellbeing.
5. Take it One Step at a Time
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a few moments of mindfulness throughout the day can make a difference. Notice that when you take each step, the ground is beneath your feet, or simply notice the feeling of your breath.
6. Stretch with Awareness
Incorporate stretches into your day as a way to practice mindfulness. Notice how your body feels as you move, and observe any sensations or emotions that come up.
7. Practice Mindful Listening
When someone is talking to you, really listen. Put aside your devices, don’t check your mailbox, and focus on the conversation. This will make for a more meaningful conversation and strengthen relationships.
8. Unplug from Devices
Take a break from your devices a few times a day to give yourself a digital detox. Spend time in nature or simply be in the present moment without distractions.
9. Practice Gratitude
Mindfulness doesn’t have to involve sitting still. You can be mindful while walking, doing chores, or even while you’re in line at the grocery store. Take a few moments to be thankful for the things in your life.
10. Find Support
Getting support from trusted friends and family can help to keep you accountable while you’re learning to practice mindfulness. Look for local yoga classes, mindfulness retreats or a guided mindfulness practice.
Incorporating mindfulness into your daily life and health can provide you with greater wellbeing. Keep in mind that it’s a practice, and even a few moments of mindfulness each day can make a world of difference.
